HerStory

“The amnesia of women’s stories is a global phenomenon.”

Thankfully the determination to remember and tell those stories is also growing.

Come and honour the women in your life and families by:

  • Bringing a Story

  • Sharing a Story

  • Hearing a Story

  • Creating a Story

  • Crafting a Story

Imagine recreating the village vibe of gathering together over luscious food, crafting and story telling.

That’s exactly what we are doing in our Self-Care Saturdays. We’d love you to join us in this relaxed, warm space, to honour the complexity of mothers, mothering and womanhood.

We’ll gather in a small group at the beautiful Monkey Temple to:

  • share and hear HerStories,

  • enjoy the freedom of playing with crafting materials: 🌟 needle felting 🌟simple sculptural mediums 🌟soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolours and other lush drawing materials.

  • connect over Veronica’s “to die for” afternoon tea.

Let’s tell stories which are: “complete, multi-faceted stories of women. It is through telling all facets of herstory - the light and dark - that we acknowledge, heal and transcend.”

HerStory

A little about HerStory (thanks to Google and Wikipedia!)

  • “Herstory is a term for history written from a feminist perspective and emphasizing the role of women, or told from a woman's point of view.”

  • The term was credited as first being used in 1970 by Robin Morgan with it gaining more recent momentum through movements in Ireland and Britain in 2014-2016.

  • Through telling HerStory/ies we:

    • honour the uniqueness and talents of every individual.

    • understand age and the phases of life and each phase is celebrated equally, for its unique qualities and wisdom.

    • deconstruct rigid notions of identity, sexuality, gender and culture.

    • “aim is to enable people of all genders to see themselves in and feel empowered by the women history leaves out.” https://herstoryuk.org/about

Questions?

*Do you have any discounts available?

We’re so glad you asked. YES! We’d like to offer 1-2 reduced/no cost tickets so folks without the means can still benefit. Please get in touch if you’re in this situation and we’ll shoot a ticket your way. This is a genuine offer so please don’t be shy! You deserve self-care just as much as anyone else.

I like the sound of it, but it’s a bit airy fairy. What will we actually do?

Arriving at 2pm, settle in with a cuppa and a short welcome. We’ll introduce ourselves and have one HerStory shared. Then we’ll introduce and demonstrate the crafting options and set ourselves up to connect and create. Folks will be invited to share and hear stories in smaller groups. We will pause for a sumptuous afternoon tea, then continue crafting, before a final gathering for sharing and reflecting. You can be as social or quiet as you wish and you will walk away with your own creations.

I’m not sure what I want to make or if I want to tell a story. Can I still come?

This is a no expectations, completely supportive space focused on creating an opportunity for self and community care. If you would like to come to simply sit and soak up the loveliness of the space, connect with others and enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea, that is completely fine! Though we suspect once you see the open invitation and freedom to play with crafting materials, that you’ll want to get your hands on it.

Is this an event just for women?

Firstly, in the words of HerStory: “We are dedicated to the deconstruction of fixed gender ideas and representations. Sexuality is diverse and should be represented in all its unique expressions.” Secondly, we believe that men are equally in need of remembering the stories of women in their lives and families. The gifts available to us all from remembering and retelling women’s stories should not be just for the women.

Is this one of those intense navel gazing type things?

I do love creating spaces where folks can reflect, connect and get real about life. Your afternoon includes time to share and hear the stories of women in our lives, or perhaps our own stories. However, there is NEVER an expectation that anyone will share beyond what they are comfortable with. And if you’re needing quiet solitude there’s plenty of room for that too. Crafting is such a gorgeous opportunity to just slow down, sit for a bit and share what’s on your mind. So that’s the vibe we create through Self-Care Saturdays.

Urgh! Toxic positivity? No thanks!

I’ve got a huge radar for toxic positivity which comes in the form of “isn’t it wonderful to celebrate mother’s day” or “let’s tell the stories of the amazing women in our lives, without recognising the messiness and the light and dark hues of EVERY life lived. We want to create a space that is inclusive, diverse, rich and real. There’s a lot of folks out there offering some form of quick fix to the complex journey of being ourselves in this big world. I’m not one of them!

So expect encouragement and support to journey gently within, to connect with authenticity and care, without any spoken or unspoken pressure to “be” anything other than just how you are.

I’ve got my own materials. Do I get a discount?

Yes! If you’ve got all the materials you need, please get in touch for a discount code to apply at checkout.

Just a friendly reminder - we’ve only got a few places available… so you best get to it if you want a spot. The last workshop sold 8 places in 4 days!
